Big head, tiny legs, one giant shiny eye. This kawaii unicorn coloring page shows a chubby baby unicorn standing on a soft cloud with a five band rainbow curving behind it. The mane falls in fat curls, the horn has five stripes, and small hearts dot its round side.

We kept every shape large, so kids from about 3 to 7 can color it with thick crayons. Plan on 15 to 20 minutes. An older child who wants to shade the mane may stay with it for half an hour.

What makes this unicorn so easy

The body is mostly one wide white shape. That is good news for a small hand, because there is room to scribble without crossing a line. The legs are short and thick, with a pale hoof at the end of each one. Your child can fill those four hooves with one color in under a minute and feel done with a real part of the picture.

The mane is where the fun starts. Each lock is a separate closed shape, so each one can take its own color. Tell your child to pick one color for each curl and to skip around. Nobody needs a plan.

Kawaii unicorn coloring page color ideas

Soft colors suit this style best. Try pink, lilac and sky blue in the mane, then go with a warm yellow for the first horn stripe and pink for the next. The hearts on the side can stay pale so they look like spots on a toy.

You do not have to stop at a white unicorn, though. Here are some swaps kids like:

  • A mint green body with a purple mane
  • A pale peach body with rainbow curls
  • A light gray body with a golden horn

The rainbow has five bands, so go in order with red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Or make a candy rainbow with only pinks and purples. Leave the big cloud white and rub a little blue along the bottom edge. It will look puffy right away.

Little tricks for the face

The eye is already filled in, with three white dots for shine. Ask your child to leave those dots alone. They are what makes the unicorn look awake and happy. The cheek has three short lines on an oval, so a pink crayon on its side, rubbed gently, gives a real blush.

Use a sharp crayon for the tip of the horn. It narrows fast, and a dull crayon will spill over the edge. If your child gets upset about that, a grown up can trace the outline again with a black marker once the page is finished. It tidies up everything.

A tiny bit of unicorn history

Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute, and this round little fellow is a long way from the unicorns in old books. The Roman writer Pliny described a fierce beast with the head of a stag, the feet of an elephant and the tail of a boar, plus a single black horn. You can read more about those old unicorn stories if your child asks. An even older Greek writer, Ctesias, wrote of wild asses from India with a horn about 28 inches long. Show your child how long that is with a tape measure.

Play with it afterward

Cut around the unicorn and glue it to a paper plate for a wall hanging, or tape a craft stick to the back for a puppet. Then let your child give it a name. Counting works well on this page too. Ask how many stars are in the sky and how many hearts are on the body, then have your child color every star the same color as a way to keep track.

Teachers can use the rainbow for a quick color word lesson. Say a color and have the class find the band that should get it. For a cut and paste version, print two copies and have kids stick the second cloud under the first.

More sweet pages to print

For an even younger artist, try the baby unicorn coloring page. Kids who liked the arch behind this one can move on to the rainbow unicorn coloring page, and the kawaii cat coloring page has the same round, cheerful style.

Questions

Why is the head so big on this unicorn?

That is the kawaii look. A big head and a small body read as a baby, and babies look cute to us. It also gives small kids a large, easy space to fill.

Can a 3-year-old color this page?

Yes. The lines are bold and the spaces are wide. Most 3-year-olds will color outside the lines here and there, and the picture still looks sweet when they do.

Should I print it in color first?

You can print the colored sample and keep it next to your child as a guide. Many kids prefer to pick their own colors, so treat it as an idea and not a rule.
