On this page
This snow angel coloring page looks straight down at a child lying on their back in fresh snow. Arms and legs spread wide, the kid has swept out a big angel shape, with feathered wings and a long skirt. Around the angel you will find pine branches with berries, boot prints, a sled and a small bird with its tracks. The feathers are big and simple, so it is an easy page for ages 4 to 9.
Seen from above, the whole picture is one bold shape. Little kids can get to work right away, and most wrap it up in 25 to 35 minutes.
Good for little hands
The feathers are huge, and that is a gift for small hands. Kids can scribble in big sweeps and still stay mostly inside the lines. The arms and legs are chunky, with wide stripes. The mittens have small thumbs and cuffs, which makes them good practice for kids who are learning to color a small space.
If your 4-year-old gets tired, stop after the feathers. It will still look finished. Older kids can take on the hat, the diamond band on the coat and the rows of pine needles.
Snow angel coloring page ideas
The fun puzzle here is how to color snow on white paper. Our colored sample fills every other feather with light blue and leaves the rest white, on a pale blue page. It reads as a dent in the snow, since shaded hollows look a bit blue.
For a night scene, try the opposite. Color everything outside the angel a dark navy, and leave the feathers pale, as if moonlight were falling on them. The snowflakes can stay white or turn yellow like stars.
Clothes come next. The sample uses a pink coat with a diamond band and purple striped pants, plus teal boots and teal mittens. Brown hair spreads out on both sides of the hat. Let your child choose their own hair and skin colors, and this snow angel becomes a picture of them.
Small tips that help
- Use the side of a peeled blue crayon on the feathers. It covers the space fast and looks soft.
- Stop just short of the kid's body, then go back carefully around the arms.
- Trace the thin lines in each feather with a darker blue. They show where the arms swept back and forth.
- Add sparkle by dabbing white glue on the snowflakes and sprinkling on a little glitter.
What is snow made of?
Lying in fresh snow feels soft for a reason. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says most of a snow layer is air, because air surrounds each tiny ice crystal. That is why your body sinks in so easily, and why you can sweep a wing with one arm.
All that air has other effects. Snow is a good insulator, so it slows heat from moving out of the ground. Fresh, fluffy snow also soaks up sound, which helps explain why a snowy yard can seem so quiet. And it looks white because clean snow reflects most of the visible sunlight. Make one, even without snow
Got no snow where you live? Your kids can lie on a blanket or a rug and do the same motion. Sweep the arms up and down, and slide the legs open and closed. Young children get a good stretch, and it is a calm way to start a rest time.
Here is a sweet classroom craft. Have each child lie on a long sheet of butcher paper while a helper traces around them. They color their own life-size angel and write their name on it.
You can also try a quiet moment outside after the next snowfall. Stand still with your child and listen. Does the street sound different? Ask them to tell you what they hear, then draw it.
Counting works here too. Find all six snowflakes, then count the feathers in one wing.
