This teddy bear with heart coloring page shows a soft, round bear sitting on a small rug and hugging a big red heart with a pink center. It wears a bow tie with a gold button in the middle, and its big feet show round pads with three toes each. Little hearts and dots cover the wall behind it, and two toy blocks sit on the floor.

Everything here is big and simple. Kids from about 2 to 8 can enjoy it, and it takes 10 to 20 minutes.

A teddy bear with heart coloring page for small kids

Toddlers need large spaces, and this bear has them. A two year old can fill the tummy, the head and the legs with one fat crayon. Children of five or six can work on the foot pads and the inner ears, then add fur marks with quick short lines.

If your child has a favorite soft toy at home, put it on the table. Copying its colors is a good way to practice looking closely.

Colors for your bear

Honey brown is the classic teddy color, and a lighter tan for the muzzle and paw pads gives the face a soft look. Keep the heart bright red so it jumps off the page. We used a pink center, but white or gold would look nice too.

A purple rug and a peach wall give the bear some contrast. We made the bow tie blue, so it stands apart from the heart. For a fun change, make a pink bear with a blue bow tie or a white polar bear with a green tie. Kids often like to match the tie to a shirt they own. Let them.

Tips for a soft, fuzzy look

  • Press lightly and use small circles. The bear will look fluffy and not flat.
  • Add a slightly darker brown around the edges of the head and tummy.
  • Color the nose in if your page is a bit faint. Dark noses help a face read clearly.
  • Try a colored pencil over crayon to soften the marks.

The president behind the teddy bear

Teddy bears got their name from a real hunting trip. In 1902, US President Theodore Roosevelt went bear hunting in Mississippi and refused to shoot a bear that had been tied up. A cartoon of the story ran in the newspaper. A Brooklyn candy shop owner named Morris Michtom saw it, and his wife made a stuffed bear to sell. He called it Teddy's bear.

At about the same time, a toy maker in Germany named Richard Steiff designed his own soft bear, and it became a big hit too. So two countries helped create this favorite toy. Both bear stories are told in full on Wikipedia.

Teddy bears are still a big part of childhood. Many hospitals keep them for young patients, and police and fire crews in many towns carry them to comfort kids after an accident. There is even a National Teddy Bear Day on September 9.

Bear themed things to try

Hold a teddy bear picnic. Spread a blanket on the floor, invite the toys and hang your finished picture on the wall as the party sign. Kids can make small paper plates and pretend to pour tea.

Practice feelings with the picture as well. Ask your child who they would give this heart to and why. Then talk about ways to show love without buying anything, such as giving a hug, helping set the table or making a card.

For a little math, line up three toys from small to big. Which is the biggest? Which is the softest? It sounds simple, and sorting like this is an important early skill.

Sleepy child? Color this one just before bed, then tuck the page under a pillow or next to a favorite toy. It makes a calm end to a busy day.
