Big eyes, tiny smile and a head nearly as big as her whole body: this kawaii girl coloring page draws its look from Japanese cartoon style. She has two long pigtails tied with bows, a dress covered in little stars and red shoes. In one hand she holds a yellow star. In the other she holds a lollipop almost as big as her face. Hearts float behind her, and four daisies grow at her feet.

The picture is simple enough for kids from 4 to 10. Younger children will enjoy the large hair and dress shapes. Older ones can spend their time on the eyes and the lollipop. Give it about 20 minutes.

Make her your own

This girl can look like anyone, and that is the best part. Kids love to color her to match themselves, a sister or a best friend. Pick a hair color first. Brown, black, red and blonde all work, and so do pink or blue if you want a real cartoon look.

Skin tones are worth a moment too. A good box of crayons has a range of browns and peaches, so let your child find the shade that feels right. Layering a light brown over a soft yellow can give a warm, natural color.

Purple dress, white collar and red shoes make a sweet set. For a change, try a mint dress with a pink collar, or a yellow dress with blue shoes. The five stars on the skirt can all be gold, or each one can get its own shade.

The bottom edge of the dress has a wide band, which looks nice in a lighter version of the main color. Her puffy sleeves can match that band. Socks can stay white, though striped socks are easy to add with two crayons.

Her lollipop is made of rings, one inside the other. Take turns with pink and white for a candy look. You could also go through the rainbow from the outside in.

Getting the shiny hair and eyes

The eyes are huge and mostly black, with two white dots and a curved shape near the bottom. That curved spot is a chance to pick her eye color. Purple, blue or green will glow against the black. Leave the white dots empty, because they make her look alive.

For hair, color in the direction it grows. Start at the bows and pull the crayon down each pigtail with long strokes. Press harder near the bottom and lighter near the top. You will get a soft shine with very little work.

Keep the blush soft. Rub a pink crayon on a scrap of paper, then dab it on the cheek ovals with your finger.

Where this style comes from

Kawaii is a Japanese word for cute, and big eyes with small mouths are two of its best known features. Our girl also borrows from a style called chibi, a word used in Japan for very short people and children. In this style, as the chibi article on Wikipedia explains, the head can take up a third to a half of a character's height. A regular cartoon character is about seven or eight heads tall.

Show your child how to test this. Hold a finger over the head of our girl, then see how many fingers fit from her chin to her shoes. Now try it on a family photo.

Draw a friend for her

Older kids can use this page as a drawing lesson. Start with a big circle for the head. Add a small body under it, then set two big eyes low on the face with a tiny mouth between them. In ten minutes they will have their own kawaii character.

Younger kids might tell a story instead. Where is she going with that lollipop, and who gave her the star? Write the answer on the back and you have a tiny book.

For a girl drawn in a more everyday style, print the girl coloring page. She would get along well with the kawaii bunny coloring page, and the kawaii boba tea coloring page gives her something to drink.

Questions

Can I color her to look like my child?

Yes, please do. Pick the hair color, skin tone and eye color that match, and change the dress to a favorite color.

Why is her head so big?

Big heads and small bodies are part of the kawaii and chibi styles. They make a character look young, soft and cute.

Is this page hard to color?

No. The hair and dress are big shapes. The lollipop rings and the small stars take a little more care, which older kids usually enjoy.
