On this page
This baby chick coloring page shows a round, fluffy chick that has just hatched. The top of its spotted shell still sits on its head like a hat, the other half rests on the ground beside it, and it looks very pleased with itself. A wooden fence, daisies and a big sun fill in the farmyard. Thick lines and big shapes make it a good pick for ages 2 to 7. Expect about 15 minutes of coloring.
Nothing on this sheet is hard. The chick is one large shape, and each piece of shell has just a few round spots. If you have a toddler at home, this is one of the easiest Easter or spring pages on our site.
Best for little hands
Very young kids mostly scribble, and that is fine. Give them a fat yellow crayon and let them go. The dark outline keeps the picture clear even when the color wanders outside it.
Older preschoolers can work on the spots. Filling a small circle is good practice for hand control, and it helps get them ready for writing. Tell them each spot gets its own color, and they will likely stay busy a bit longer.
Baby chick coloring page color ideas
Yellow is the obvious choice, and a lighter yellow on the belly gives the chick a soft look. The beak and feet can be orange, and pink cheeks finish the face. For the shell, stay with a pale cream so that the bright spots pop.
Real chicks are not always yellow. Some breeds hatch brown, black, or even striped, so a brown chick is just as true to life. Kids may also ask for a blue one. Why not? It is their page.
Give the sky a pale blue and the hill a fresh green. A round yellow sun in the corner ties it all together.
Tips for a soft, fluffy look
- Use small circles with the crayon instead of straight lines. It looks like fluff.
- Rub a tissue over the yellow to blend it.
- Keep the cheeks light, with a gentle touch.
- Color the zigzag edge of the shell slowly, since it is the one tricky line.
How a chick gets out of its egg
A hen's egg takes about 21 days to hatch. During the last days, the chick starts to peep from inside the shell, and the mother hen can hear it. To break out, it uses a small bump on its beak called an egg tooth. That bump falls off soon after hatching.
Getting out is hard work and can take many hours. A wet chick comes out tired, but its down dries into soft fluff within a few hours. You can learn more about chickens on Britannica.
Chicks can walk and peck for food on the day they hatch, which surprises many kids. Human babies take about a year to walk, and a chick does it in a day.
Learning ideas to go with it
Talk about life cycles with young kids. Draw four boxes on a sheet of paper: egg, chick, young bird and hen. Your child can color this page for the second box and draw the others.
Count the spots on both pieces of shell together, and sort them by size. Ask which is the biggest and which is the smallest. For very little ones, practice saying the sound a chick makes. Peep, peep, peep. Toddlers love that part. Then try cows, ducks and sheep, which are easy for a two year old to copy.
You can also cut out the top shell along the zigzag and tape it at one side. Then kids can lift it like a hat and say hello to the chick. It takes two minutes and keeps them laughing for much longer.
