Dog and Cat Coloring Page
This dog and cat coloring page shows two best friends sitting side by side on a round rug. On the left is a puppy with floppy ears and its tongue out. On the right is a cat with pointy ears, big eyes and long whiskers. A big heart floats above them, with stars and little hearts around it. It is an easy, cheerful page for ages 3 to 8.
Both animals are made of big ovals and circles. Their faces add a few small parts to finish. Most kids are done in 15 to 25 minutes.
Who this page is for
This page is perfect for families with a dog and a cat, or for kids who cannot decide which pet they like best. Preschoolers can color each animal in one color. Older kids can add spots, stripes, collars and name tags.
Teachers can use it to start a talk about friendship. Two very different animals can still be good friends, and so can two very different kids.
Dog and cat coloring page color ideas
A tan puppy with brown ears and a gray cat make a nice pair. The colors are different enough that each friend stands out. Give the puppy a pink tongue, and give the cat pink inner ears.
Kids can also color the pets to match their own. A black cat next to a golden dog looks great, and so does an orange cat next to a white dog with brown spots.
Make the big heart bright red. A pink rug and a soft pink background keep the whole page warm and sweet.
Tips for two friends
- Pick each pet's main color first, then choose the background so both animals stand out.
- Color the faces last. Small parts are easier once the big bodies are done.
- Draw collars on both pets before coloring. Matching collars show they belong together.
- Write the pets' names on the rug with a marker.
Can dogs and cats be friends?
Yes, many dogs and cats live together happily. It often works best when they meet while young, or when they are given time to get used to each other slowly. You can read more on Wikipedia.
Dogs and cats speak different body languages, which can cause mix ups. A dog often wags its tail when it is happy. A cat that swishes its tail fast is usually annoyed. Once they learn each other's signals, they get along much better.
Both pets also like routines. They feel safe when meals, walks and play time happen at about the same time each day. Some dog and cat pairs even nap together on the same couch. If you have both pets at home, ask your child to watch them for a few minutes and draw one thing they do together. Then hang the drawing next to this colored page.
Things to do after coloring
Ask your child to tell a story about the day the dog and the cat became friends. Write it on the back of the page or let younger kids draw the next scene.
In class, this page is great for a lesson on being kind to someone new. Kids can list ways the dog and the cat could help each other.
For a fun sorting game, make two columns, one for dogs and one for cats. Talk about what each pet likes, like fetch for dogs and climbing for cats, and write them in the right column.
